Among the eight men who advanced to the Open Division quarterfinals at the Exchange Celebrating Service: Fort Jackson on Monday afternoon, there was a mix of veteran and new faces. For world No. 3 ranked Will Hogue, the strategy for hitting the grid at Fort Jackson Golf Club is a common one among hitters this week.
“The right side seems to be working the best, so everyone's trying to get the ball [to land on] the right side. I actually struggled with that all day today. I was mostly hitting draws into the left. It's not like me, but it works.”
On Tuesday’s live telecast on GOLF Channel at 5 p.m. ET, Hogue will be joined in the Quarterfinals by World Long Drive regulars Tim Burke – who won the Ak-Chin Smash in the Sun last month – (No. 4) Ryan Steenberg, (No. 5) Kyle Berkshire, (No. 14) Steve Kois, and (No. 18) Jim Waldron.
The two men rounding out the quarterfinalists will be competing in a televised World Long Drive event for the first time: No. 46 Josh Koch, and No. 67 Jordan Brooks.
“To be honest, it feels very, very good,” says Brooks, who is from England and is making his first trip ever to the United States this week. “I didn’t think I’d get in with 425 [points in the Round of 16]. I got lucky with the penultimate set, and things went my way. Other guys who could have caught me didn’t have their best stuff, and I snuck in at the end.”
Tuesday’s Quarterfinal matches are listed below. The live telecast also will feature the semifinalists in the Women’s and Military Division having advanced from Tuesday morning’s preliminary qualifying rounds.
