The Masters Division (age 45+) competition kicked off on Monday at the Volvik World Long Drive Championship, though inclement weather forced the competition into Tuesday morning. Following significant weather delays, Eddie Fernandes and Jeff Gavin ultimately were able to separate themselves from the pack. They’ll meet in the Masters Division championship match live on Golf Channel Tuesday night, with the coveted championship belt on the line.
The 36-man field at the start of competition featured past world champions, familiar faces, as well as newcomcers to the Long Drive circuit. For the majority of the field, the preliminary round of competition was contested in ideal conditions. The last of the four pods of competitors were forced to contend with less than ideal weather conditions during the course of their four eight-ball sets.
The Round of 16 – which was scheduled to be contested Monday evening before weather pushed it to Tuesday morning – saw eight men advance to the match play portion of the competition, with Fernandes and Gavin winning both their quarterfinal and semifinal matches to claim a spot in the championship match Tuesday night.
