The Masters Division of the Ak-Chin Smash in the Sun culminated on Saturday evening with a match between the reigning 2018 World Long Drive champion, Eddie Fernandes, and the “Iceman,” Kevin Blenkhorn, with Blenkhorn earning the win with a 393 yard blast in the finals. The path to victory came as somewhat of a surprise to the 50-year-old from Canada.
“I actually wasn’t expecting much at all,” said Blenkhorn of his chances this week. “I’ve been sick for the last couple of weeks, so I pounded like three 5 Hour Energy [drinks] in the last hour, and that kept the energy up.”
That extra jolt helped Blenkhorn get past Jeff “The Critter” Crittenden with a 404-yard drive in the quarterfinals, followed by a 399 yard blast in the semifinals to advance past Mike Bauman.
“I nutted that ball against Critter,” said Blenkhorn. “That’s the best ball I’ve hit this weekend.”
On the other side of the bracket, Fernandes faced Tom Peppard, and edging him out by a yard with a drive of 399 yards.
Blenkhorn’s victory marks the second consecutive season that he has won the first Tour event of the year in the Masters Division, after claiming the 2018 Clash in the Canyon last April.
The next Masters Division Tour event is scheduled to take place in July.
