World No. 12 Kyle Berkshire (Orlando, Fla.) utilized a 356-yard blast in the WinStar Midwest Slam final to outlast Jim Waldron (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and claim his first-ever victory on the World Long Drive circuit.
After beginning the 2018 season with a consistent string of four consecutive quarterfinal finishes (East Coast Classic, Clash in the Canyon, Ak-Chin Smash in the Sun, Atlantic City Boardwalk Bash), the 21-year-old finally was able to break away from the pack to earn the win. The venue is one that has suited Berkshire well in the past, after advancing to the semifinals at WinStar in the 2017 Volvik World Long Drive Championship last September before falling to eventual runner-up Mitch Grassing.
With Saturday’s victory, Berkshire will move inside the top-10, as the new No. 9-ranked competitor in the world. The Orlando resident will hope to repeat his good form in a little less than a month’s time, when the competitors reconvene on the Oklahoma / Texas border for the season-culminating event with the coveted World Championship belt on-the-line, beginning Aug. 30.
