The World Long Drive Association heads north of the border where competitors will battle at the Bash for Cash, Friday-Sunday, July 6-8. The 36-man field competing in the Tour event on Sunday, July 8 will feature seven of the top-10 competitors in the World Long Drive rankings, while Volvik World Long Drive Championship qualifying will take place Friday-Saturday, July 6-7.
Previously staged near Niagara Falls, the Canadian Tour stop this year for the first time will transition to Stark’s Golf Course, a 9-hole facility in Port Rowan, Ontario, along Lake Erie.
WORLD NO. 1 JAMES TO DEFEND: Saturday’s Tour event will provide an opportunity for reigning Volvik World Long Drive champion (and current World No. 1) Justin James (Jacksonville, Fla.) to defend his 2017 victory. James overpowered Jason Eslinger (Deerfield, Kan.) in the final last summer, with a winning drive of 430 yards against Eslinger’s 401 yards.
Utilizing the new format implemented at the beginning of the season, the WLDA once again will host a Tour Qualifier for 16 competitors on Saturday afternoon to have a chance to compete in Sunday’s Tour event. Much like a “Monday qualifier” on golf’s professional tours, it will be staged as an Open qualifier, with 16 competing for four spots in the Tour event field. The format will be five sets, with point totals accrued and the top-four advancing to the Tour Event. The Tour event then will proceed with four “pods” of nine competitors with point totals determining those who advance.
2018 VOLVIK WORLD LONG DRIVE CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFYING: Competitors having registered for their chance to qualify for the 2018 Volvik World Long Drive Championship will have an opportunity to showcase their skills on Friday-Saturday, July 6-7. Four preliminary qualifying rounds (formerly known as local qualifying) will take place on each day, with four competitors from each advancing to a 16-man final qualifier (formerly regional qualifying) in the afternoon. The top-three competitors from the final qualifier each day (using a points system) will advance to the 2018 Volvik World Long Drive Championship in September, for a total of six spots up for grabs at the Bash for Cash.
TOUR EVENT FIELD OF 32 (IN ORDER OF WORLD RANKING): Justin James, Maurice Allen, Ryan Reisbeck, Tim Burke, Ryan Steenberg, Paul Howell, Mitch Grassing, Kyle Berkshire, Landon Gentry, Justin Moose, Jeff Gavin, Eddie Fernandes, Mark Costello, Wes Patterson, Scott Kalamar, Josh Cassaday, Stephen Kois, Spencer McDaniel, Jeff Crittenden, Ben Tuaone, Daniel Lambert, Bobby Bradley, Jacob Golliday, Tyler Barton, Rob Tiettmeyer, Danny Moorehead, Ryan Dougan, Jim Devine, EJ McDonnell, Scott Levy, Eric Lunt, John Buck.
